TIPS Program for Alcohol Servers

Steve Heineman has been training island bartenders with a TIPS program for 30 years. This year’s training will be held at the Niagara Events Center. Two classes will be on Monday, June 17, and Tuesday, June 18. Classes will begin at 8:30 a.m. and conclude at 11:30 a.m. Cost for the class will be $60 per person.
TIPS (Training in Intervention Procedures for Servers of Alcohol) is intended for workers, their man- agers and the owners of businesses that sell alcohol. The approximately 3-hour course will teach the attendees the effects of alcohol on the body, interacting with customers and the server’s responsibility to the community. Instruction is in the form of class lecture, viewing videos of actors in sample situations and will be reinforced by the use of role-play and a short quiz covering the materials presented in the class.
Upon successful completion the student will receive a certificate from the TIPS organization that is good for two years. Many states, as well as service clubs and food service companies require this training to sell alcohol, and many insurance companies offer discounts for liquor liability insurance to businesses that have employees trained in TIPS.
